International Ph.D. Programs in the Life Sciences Zurich Graduate School
The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years.
Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Masters degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to register with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the affiliation of their future research group.

University of Otago Postgraduate Award, New Zealand

Summary: This Award is offered by the University of Otago for Masters’ thesis study in any subject.
Comments: Postgraduate Awards are awarded by the University Council, on the recommendation of the Senate, to candidates in the first year of their thesis research for a Master’s degree.
Tenure of a Postgraduate Award by a Master’s degree student is for one year, or until the thesis is submitted, (whichever period is the shorter.) Students must be in the first year of their thesis research to be eligible for an Award. A shorter period of tenure shall be awarded in cases where four months or more of registration as a candidate for the degree have already been completed at the time of the award. Overseas tenure of a Postgraduate Award is not permitted.
Eligibility Information: Postgraduate Awards are available only to students seeking to obtain their first Masters qualification. The University of Otago Postgraduate Awards are open to Domestic Fee Paying Students only. Confirmation of the Award is dependent on approval of the application to register as a Masters candidate and completion of the enrolment procedure.

The Zurich Ph.D. Program in Molecular Life Sciences is a joint program of the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, two highly prestigious Swiss universities with excellent research facilities. The program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. in biochemistry, bioinformatics and computational biology, genetics, microbiology, and cell, developmental, molecular, structural and systems biology. Students accepted into the program perform their research project in one of the participating research groups, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. Students will obtain their Ph.D. from either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich and receive a graded certificate from the program. The program is run in English.

Interviews
Applications are evaluated by an admissions committee. Selected candidates are invited for an interview taking place in Zurich in early February and in early September, for the application deadlines of December 1st and July 1st, respectively. Candidates will have the opportunity to meet with group leaders of their choice to discuss possible areas of research. Accommodation and travel expenses are reimbursed by the program committee. Accepted candidates are informed shortly after the interviews and should start their work within six months of acceptance to the program.
Travel Grant
The MLS program can offer 15-20 travel grants per year. The program may cover up to CHF 1000.- for the attendance of international meetings or summer schools. Application deadlines are every three months: January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.

Project summary:
Rice blast disease is a major constraint on world rice production and there is an urgent need for more effective and durable control strategies, particularly in the rice-growing nations most affected. Research at Exeter is focused on developing an understanding of the biology of the rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, utilising functional genomics and cell biology.
The Halpin Studentship Programme provides generous funding for scientists to carry out a PhD in molecular plant pathology in the laboratory of Professor Nicholas J. Talbot. The four-year studentship has a generous stipend, travel allowance, consumables budget and a home-integration award on completion.
